Friday's Gumbo

The House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee released a report on their findings of the BP oil disaster. Rep. Issa from California hosted a hearing to coincide with the release of this report. The hearing was friendly at times and unfriendly at other times, a typical congressional hearing where you already know the story it frames.

One year after the BP oil disaster we have yet to see any meaningful industry and governmental changes or legislation passed to fix the problems that led to the disaster in the first place. The hearing lost the bigger picture. Industry and those in political power that are close to industry are trying to speed up deepwater drilling without first fixing all the problems that led to 250 million gallons of crude oil being discharged into the Gulf of Mexico. Our economy, communities, and environment can’t afford another BP oil disaster. Any congressional action on Gulf Coast recovery must be about preventing another disaster and ensuring that the Clean Water Act fines be dedicated to the Gulf Coast.

Please send a note to your congressperson asking for Clean Water Act fines to return.
