Fall 2011 Research Intern Needed to Help Protect the Gulf Coast and Communities

Fall 2011 Save Our Gulf Research Intern
Save Our Gulf is an initiative of Waterkeeper Alliance.  Save Our Gulf was specifically created in the wake of the BP oil disaster to quickly and effectively share information and resources among the seven directly impacted Waterkeeper organizations (Galveston Baykeeper, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper, Louisiana Bayoukeeper, Mobile Baykeeper, and Apalachicola Riverkeeper). Because of our newly formed coalition, we were able to regularly monitor 731 miles of coastal areas for the first signs of tar balls, rainbow sheens, and hydrocarbon slicks as they came in to coastal areas.

Location: New Orleans, LA.

Hours: Full or Part Time (Unpaid).

Job Responsibilities: The Save Our Gulf Research Intern will work closely with the Save Our Gulf Coordinator.  Responsibilities of the Save Our Gulf Research Intern include supporting all seven Waterkeepers located on the Gulf coast to begin several projects including:

•    Mapping, archiving, and communicating the daily oil spills that happen along the Gulf coast both within the continental shelf and on the outer continental shelf.
•    Assist volunteers with inputting of data into the Save Our Gulf website.
•    Assist in creating and distributing Save Our Gulf news and information using written, audio, or visual media
•    Assist in updating the Save Our Gulf website, including compiling news articles, sharing new information on social networks, and posting blogs about the Save Our Gulf initiative.
•    Engaging in other Save Our Gulf support functions.

Qualifications:
•    Working knowledge and experience using email, word processing, and spreadsheet software applications.
•    Initiative to work independently; must be comfortable working remotely with little to no supervision.

•    Excellent written and oral communication skills.
•    Understanding of online and traditional research techniques.
•    Must have own laptop and phone.
